Starbucks is about to give local coffee drinkers another jolt.
A company statement Wednesday says Springfield will be included in a new round of 300 store closings worldwide, though specific locations would not be released until workers are notified.
The announcement comes less than three months after a Starbucks in Chatham closed just nine months into business.
“Though we do know the Springfield market will be impacted, we do not at this time have specific details about number of or locations of stores,” said the statement released from the corporate headquarters in Seattle.
The closings, which include about 200 Starbucks outlets in the United States, are in addition to 600 made last year.
The statement says the latest closings should be completed within nine months.
About 6,000 in-store and 700 non-store employees will be laid off from a worldwide work force of 167,000.
Starbucks has four standalone company stores in Springfield: at 3412 Freedom Drive in Parkway Pointe shopping center, 745 Stevenson Drive in the Park South development, 2003 W. Monroe St. and 3200 Clear Lake Ave. There also are Starbucks cafes in the Hilton Springfield, Target and Barnes & Noble Booksellers.
The Hilton Starbucks is the city’s oldest, opening in 2003. The newest is the Stevenson Drive store, which opened in April 2008.
Starbucks Corp. reported Wednesday profits fell 69 percent in the first three months of the fiscal year, to $64.3 million compared to $208.1 million for the same period last year. The company also announced it would open only 140 new U.S. stores this year, rather than the 200 earlier projected, and that chief executive Howard Schultz’s base salary would be cut to $10,000, including benefits, for the current fiscal year.
Schultz earned $1.2 million last year.
