U.S. Senators Congressman Mike Ross (AR-04), Blanche Lincoln, and Mark Pryor recently announced that the city of Prescott will receive a $910,000 Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The funds will be used to service a commercial area along Interstate 30 in Prescott. The improvements are anticipated to create about 30 jobs and will help ensure business retention and expansion while accommodating increased traffic volume in the area.
According to Mayor Howard Taylor, the grant will accomplish several projects that need to be updated and improved.
“All the work will be concentrated on the Exit 44 area of I-30,” he said. “The old sewer lift station has to be rebuilt to sustain our businesses out there. It was built in the early 1970s.
“On the TA side, there is 300 feet of city street that is gravel and it will be turned into concrete, which will help the trucks stay cleaner when they exit the truck wash that is in that vicinity. This grant will help create approximately 30 jobs and the truck wash will also expand.”
“This grant application took two years to come to reality,” he said. “We want to extend thanks to the congressional delegation for their help. Also, Renee Dycuss and Blake Harrell with the Southwest Planning and Development District were also very instrumental in getting the application prepared and submitted. We also want to thank Mary Godwin, of the Economic Development Corporation for all of her hard work.”
“Over the years, we have had substantial growth in that area,” Taylor said. “With that being the largest commercial area of Prescott, we want to make it more accessible to businesses and travelers.”
When asked about the length of the construction, Taylor said that within 60 days, construction would hopefully begin. “It depends on the weather and the project should take about 60 days to complete, again depending on the weather,” he said.
Mary Godwin, director of Economic Development Corporation in Prescott also expressed gratitude for those responsible for working on the grant and bringing the plan into fruition. “I want to express thanks and gratitude to all who have worked on this grant for so long,” she said.
“Investing in our infrastructure not only helps create jobs now, but it also prepares our local economies for long-term economic growth,” said Ross. “I am proud to announce this investment in I-30 around Prescott, because it will help them better handle the increased volume in traffic and better serve the businesses along this important traffic corridor.”
“I am thrilled to announce this investment that will create construction jobs and promote long-term economic development in Prescott,” Lincoln said. “Strong roads and infrastructure are critical to Arkansas’s businesses for transporting goods and attracting customers, and I will continue to do everything I can to secure funding for projects that strengthen Arkansas’s economy.” “Building a strong transportation system is vital to attracting economic development opportunities and growing local communities. These funds will help boost Prescott’s economy, create good jobs, and improve the quality of life for area residents,” Pryor said.
“We always welcome new businesses to Prescott,” Taylor said. “One of my responsibilities as mayor is to keep the economy strong in Prescott and I am striving to do so. I have to keep the infrastructure going as far as police and fire protection is concerned also, and grants like this will help me and others involved do so.”
