Prescott Head Coach Greg Smith said the Curley Wolves who take the field in 2009 will be seeking a way to capitalize on experience from the 2008 season though this year’s team is - in Smith’s words - “smaller and different.”
The returning starters and those with play experience will be vital to the team’s success this season.
Smith said James Colbert is among those who have that necessary experience though fans may see some new plays from this Curley Wolf. Colbert has played defensive line, but will be playing some as tailback this season, Smith said.
Other starters to watch, according to Smith, include Jordan Williamson and Gavin Bostic.
Smith cited the off-season work done by senior Lindsey Burke.
“Lindsey has probably come to boot camp this year better than anybody,” Smith said. “He has grown into a spectacular football player.”
Smith said there are some other players who deserve recognition.
“Seth Easterling has been phenomenal in the off-season,” Smith said.
While the starters and those with extensive field experience are typically called on to defend the field and carry the ball, Smith said there are some non-starters on this year’s roster that may also be important to the season’s outcome. Among those are London Cole, Gaylon Biggs and Skyler Tippitt are on that list.
Senior Aston Eason didn’t play during the 2008 season, Smith said.
“But he looks like he can help us.”
The annual Maroon/White Scrimmage game kicked off with the Maroon team taking a pass but making only a short run before being stopped by the White. Maroon’s #1 held for the next run and handed off for the next.
The Maroons seemed to have trouble on several occasions finding an open receiver and the quarterback handed off the ball several times rather than risking an interception. Despite the issues, the Maroons made their way to the end zone and the field goal was good.
The Whites had some different issues with one incomplete pass and a fumble on another play, though Whites did recover their own ball.
Fans who attended the game got a taste of the season to come, as did those who attended another scrimmage against Glen Rose on Aug. 25. The Wolves walked away with that game and fans can hope that’s a preview of the good things to come.
