Ancel McKinnon
A graveside memorial service will be conducted by the family of Ancel Asberry “Mac” McKinnon at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hwy. 19 North, Prescott, AR at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 12, prior to the McKinnon Reunion in Texarkana/Nash.
Mr. McKinnon was born on October 14, 1914 in Nevada Co., AR. He graduated in 1934 from Prescott High School and attended college at Southern State in Magnolia. After college, he made his home in Shreveport, La. where he was a deacon in the Christian Church, a successful businessman; a public servant who was elected twice to the Caddo Parish Policy Jury and twice to the Caddo Parish School Board. His idea of a vacation was a meet-up with his Buchanan cousins at Camp Albert Pike.
Mr. McKinnon was the son of David Asberry McKinnon and Nora Ovelia Campbell McKinnon. He was descended from pioneers, Isaac & Stephen Best, who accompanied Daniel Boone through the Cumberland Gap and were among the first settlers of Boonesborough, Ky. and later accompanied Stephen Austin’s Old Colony 300 to settle Texas. His ancestor Mousers were among the earliest settlers of Hempstead Co., AR. His great-grandfather, Asberry Sutton, of Tennessee and Arkansas, served in the Mexican and Confederate Armies and his mother’s Campbell-Aslin-Barham ancestors can be traced back to Charlemagne.
Mr. McKinnon passed away on August 25, 1997 in Louisiana and donated his body to Louisiana State University Medical School for research. At his request, his remains are being laid beside his parents and only brother, Elmer. He was pre-deceased in death by his wife of 32 years, Beulah Maricle McKinnon; his youngest son, Harry Paul; and his brother who was killed in an automobile accident in 1939.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra McKinnon Loridans of Chapala, Mexico; his son, Billy Wayne of Shreveport, La.; son-in-law, Henri Loridans; daughter-in-law, Calene Owen McKinnon and daughter-in-law, Jan King McKinnon; ten grandchildren who knew him as “Pappy”, and numerous great-grandchildren.
All relatives and friends are invited to share this special homecoming. Services are under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home.
