Two thousand nine was an exciting, busy year for the Nevada County Depot and Museum. Our community support has grown through the year with improved attendance at our Chamber of Commerce coffees. We exhibited exceptional art work from Nevada Schools in January and had many very impressed visitors.
Ms. Jayne Randolph held a wonderful party for the Depot in April along with the dedication of the John teeter room. Mr. Teeter’s family has been very generous to the Depot, giving us a wonderful collection of his things.
In May, we participated in the Arkansas Heritage Month project with the Nevada County 4H Youth who photographed two natural areas in the county. Fifteen students from around the county were taught by Ms. Nancy Bailey about taking photographs in a natural setting and they produced an amazing collection.
In July the roof on the Carolina Church was replaced. The church is located on County Road 10, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in July. This was due to the hard work of Peggy Lloyd, one of our board members and archival manager at the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington, Ark.
Directors Louis Phillips and Gail Young completed the HELP training on museum management in August. Sadly, Mr. Teeter passed away during the first week of August, shortly before his 89th birthday. The Depot received many generous donations in Mr. Teeter’s memory. Even in death, Mr. Teeter helped our museum and his beloved community.
September brought a very special group to the Depot. A local Boy Scout troop visited and had a great time with our Civil War artifacts and our railroad items, especially the bell. In October, Ms. Phillips and Ms. Randolph helped with the Fall Festival and the Halloween on Elm Street festivities.
We owe sincere thanks to all of the people who helped us with the November 11 Veteran’s Day “Stars and Stripes” celebration. We are very grateful to have so many pictures of local veterans and the stories of their courageous service to their country. A special thanks also to all of the McRae Middle School students who contributed their artwork to our display. Congratulations to all the winners, who were chosen by the veterans who came to the Depot on that special day, and to the servicemen who presented the prizes at an assembly held later in the month. Ms. Pam Edmondson is to be commended for all of her hard work with these students.
December has been rather quiet though many people are still bringing us items and stories. If you have not visited the Depot recently, please come by soon. The Veterans display will be up until Jan. 8. Our mission is to share the history of Nevada County with all of our community. Please joins us in our effort to preserve and share.
