A party in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 19, led to shots fired and the injury of a Dallas man, according to information from the Arkansas State Police.
Officials say Dominick McPeak, 24, of Dallas, was shot during an altercation and is now in custody.
According to Arkansas State Police Public Relations Officer Bill Sadler, McPeak was at a large gathering at a Gurdon residence when police were summoned for a report of a fight in progress. Sadler said it’s estimated that more than 200 people were there and that both Gurdon Police and officers from the Clark County Sheriff’s Department responded.
Sadler said that “moments later, the sheriff’s office received a call from the Gurdon Police Department that shots were fired at this location.”
The man who was later identified as McPeak reportedly “fired a handgun in the direction of officers,” according to Sadler. Officers then pursued McPeak on foot.
“McPeak threw his handgun at Sheriff (David) Turner and struck him in the leg,” Sadler said.
Officers continued the search for McPeak until they received word from an officer in Fordyce that McPeak had sought out medical attention for gunshot wounds in Murfreesboro.
As of press time Monday, Sadler said there are several unanswered questions, including who shot McPeak.
“Part of our investigation will be to determine who shot him,” Sadler said, adding that the State Crime Lab will be involved in the process.
Sadler said the ASP is investigating McPeak’s actions.
“The State Police is investigating an attempted capital murder case involving Mr. McPeak and his attempt to cause harm to a police officer,” Sadler said.
Sadler said the ASP has no jurisdiction over the administration of other law enforcement agencies and said he did not know whether any officers have been relieved of duty following the shooting. Contacted Monday morning, Gurdon Marshal Don Childres cited the involvement of the ASP and declined comment.
Sadler said there was no notation in the report of any officer being injured in the incident.
