A Mississippi man has been formally charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver after the driver was stopped for speeding.
Leonard Fields, 43, 4609 Smith Road, Holly Springs, Miss., has been released on a $15,000 bond and is slated to be back in Nevada County Circuit Court in September.
According to an affidavit on file with the Nevada County Circuit Clerk, Arkansas State Trooper Adam Pinner clocked Fields’ truck at 69 miles per hour – four miles above the posted speed limit for trucks – on Interstate 30 near the 40-mile marker. According to Pinner, Fields also crossed the “fog line” prior to Pinner’s decision to stop Fields.
Pinner notes in the report that Fields was “visibly nervous” and that there were several air fresheners inside the cab of the truck. The truck was reportedly the only tractor-trailer rig owned by the company and Fields was headed to Memphis, Tenn., according to the report.
Fields reportedly gave permission to search the truck and Pinner was accompanied by ASP K-9 Officer Tommy, with Tommy alerting to the scent of narcotics near the front of the trailer.
Pinner’s report states that the trailer was 53 feet in length but that the interior length was only 49 feet. A false front was discovered and officers found “14 large black duffel bags. The bags contained a total of 744 compressed bricks of suspected marijuana.” The report goes on to state that each brick was marked with a number believed to be the weight of that brick.
The total estimated weight of the marijuana seized was 888 pounds, the report states.
Prosecuting Attorney Ashley Parker has filed a civil suit against Fields, alleging that the trailer was used to transport drugs and asking that the court seize the trailer.
