Three people have been charged after allegedly attempting to get marijuana into the Nevada County Jail on March 28.
According to court records, Kelly Erin Byrd, 21, 417 E. Fifth, Emmet; Demarione Muldrow, 25, 507 E. Fifth, Emmet; and Wade Manning, 26, 717 E. McNeil, Magnolia, were all involved in the incident.
The court records indicate that Prescott Police Department Detective David Thomason had monitored a phone conversation in which Muldrow, who was already in jail on unrelated charges, asked Byrd if she had “some shake.” Thomason stated in his report that “shake” is slang commonly referring to marijuana.
The records indicate that Byrd initially refused but gave in to Muldrow’s repeated pleas. They reportedly arranged for Byrd to bring the drugs to the jail and to leave the drugs outside “as she had done in the past,” where Manning would pick them up. Manning was also being held on unrelated charges but as a trusty, was often allowed outside, according to the report.
Nevada County Jailer Carol Pruitt reportedly denied Manning’s request to go outside on March 27, shortly after Byrd had arrived at the jail to request information about Muldrow’s fines.
Thomason’s report indicates that he located the cup on top of other trash in a trash can just outside the exit typically used by the trusty. Thomason then went to an observation point and Manning was allowed to leave the jail a short time later. Manning allegedly “looked in the trash can briefly at one point and then began scanning the area as if he was looking for someone or something.”
Byrd had reportedly told Muldrow during their initial conversation that she had been robbed and that the “shake” had been taken. On March 28, the day after Byrd allegedly left the marijuana near the jail, Byrd reportedly arrived back at the jail to report a robbery that she said had occurred on March 26. Byrd reportedly asked for a lawyer when confronted with evidence of her involvement with the marijuana. Prescott Police Department K9 Officer Jami Yarbrough arrived with PPD K9 Officer Duchess and Duchess reportedly “alerted” to the scent of drugs at Byrd’s car.
The report indicates that Manning denied knowing what would be in the cup and said that he had agreed to Muldrow’s request to retrieve the cup.
“Manning stated he had no intentions of getting the cup and he only told (Muldrow) he would so that the inmate would leave him alone,” the report states.
