Michael D. Gulley, Bluff City, accused in the shooting death of a 24-year-old Prescott woman, made a brief appearance in Nevada County Circuit Court on Sept. 3. Gulley was reportedly transferred from Varner Correctional Unit where he is now serving a sentence for escape from a Pike County facility.
Security measures were in place in Nevada County as members of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Prescott Police Department and reserve officers set up checkpoints at the courthouse, searching those who entered and announcing that cellular telephones and knives would not be allowed inside.
Gulley was held in the Pike County Jail after turning himself in for the alleged murder of a Prescott woman and the attempted murder of a man. Nevada County Sheriff Danny Martin said the move was made after other inmates made threats against Gulley.
Gulley and a second Nevada County prisoner, Jerry Mills, escaped from the Pike County Jail in early July. The two men were on the run for several days before being captured by authorities.
Gulley was returned to Pike County at that time where he was charged with escape. That case has already come to trial and Gulley is now serving a 60-month sentence on that charge.
Martin said the appearance of Gulley went smoothly without any problems. He said that was largely due to the cooperation of those who had business in the courthouse over the course of the court appearances.
