Nevada County K-9 Officer Hunter died Wednesday, Nov. 26, from complications from cancer.
According to K-9 handler and NCSO Officer Robert Missey, Hunter’s remains have been cremated.
The sheriff’s office puchased the K-9 about two years ago and Missey was immediately paired with the K-9. Missey said Hunter was a good partner and that he’ll be missed “very much.”
“He was well trained and he made numerous busts, inculding felony apprehensions,” Missey said during an interview Monday.
Hunter was trained for narcotics detection and for search and rescue. Missey said Hunter had found several missing people, both children and adults, over the course of his short career.
The loss means the sheriff’s office will now be dependent on other agencies for K-9 backup, a situation Missey said he hopes doesn’t last too long.
“We’re planning to attempt to get another dog,” Missey said.
Toward that end, the county is seeking donations from area businesses and individuals with the proceeds to be used to purchase a trained K-9.
