A hidden camera at a logging site and a teen who allowed his truck to run out of gas apparently helped local law enforcement arrest those responsible for taking radios and tools from area logging sites and deer camps.
According to information from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, William Matthew Baker, 17, 422 W. Elm, and Jacob Andrew Dewoody, 18, 3974 Highway 24, have been arrested for theft of property and breaking or entering. The two are accused of stealing citizen’s band radios, tools, a welder, knives and other items from area logging sets and deer camps.
According to a report by NCSO Chief Deputy Larry Miller, a camera hidden at a logging set caught the theft of some property late on Feb. 26. Miller noted that he found the vehicle several miles away on the side of the road. According to Miller’s report, he saw several CB radios inside the truck but there was no one there.
Dewoody arrived in a truck driven by Baker while Miller and NCSO Deputies Sean Clark and Tim McBrayer were at the scene and reportedly told officers that he had run out of gas. According to the report, Dewoody told officers that he had taken the radios from log trucks parked in various places and that there were additional items in Baker’s vehicle.
Miller’s report states that Dewoody was transported to the Nevada County Jail and that Baker was asked to go to the jail for further questioning.
According to the report, owners of local logging equipment identified property recovered from the two teens as having been stolen from their vehicles.
The report indicates that both confessed to the crimes.
