Flu shots from area health departments will be available in October and those who take advantage of the mass flu clinics can expect to receive both the traditional flu shot and a swine flu vaccine.
According to Debbie Henderson, administrator for the Nevada County Health Department, this year’s efforts will include clinics at all schools in the county. John Miller, administrator for the Clark County Health Department, said Clark County students will be offered the vaccine as well.
Henderson said the current word from state health department officials is that both the flu shot and the swine flu vaccine will be available for the clinics.
That’s the good news. Henderson said the bad news is that those who get the swine flu shot will have to get a booster in order to be fully immunized.
“If you get one dose of the swine flu vaccine, you need a booster,” Henderson said.
Henderson said there are some misconceptions out there, including a comparison with the same strain of the flu – also known as swine flu – in 1976.
“It was pretty much the same,” Henderson said.
