Trivia question: When was the last time a professional ice skating troupe performed in Hope?  If you said, “Never!” you are correct.
However, that will change at 3 p.m., Sunday, January 21 when “Skatetacular: Dreams on Ice” hits the stage at Hempstead Hall on the University of Arkansas at Hope campus.
“Skatetadular is much more than just ice skating,’ said John Hollis, president of the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council (SWAAC). The council and Hempstead Hall are sponsors of the event, described in one review as “an original story fusing live music, professional skaters and circus-type performers.”
Hollis said, “For area residents, this is a once-in-a-lifetime performance. This family show is like nothing anyone will see on television; it will be upbeat, fun, exciting, funny and extravagant.”
“The combination of skating, performers with Broadway-caliber voices and cirque-type acts has never been done before, according to a Skatetacular release. “Fusing all of these special talents together are guaranteed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats,” he said.
The professional ice skaters will be performing on a synthetic surface that looks like real ice and allows the skaters to form all the standard jumps, including the triple axle.
George S. Smith, SWAAC executive director, said, after watching numerous videos of the performers in action, “This is a great show for all members of the family, from the youngest children to grandparents. It is more of a Broadway-type show on ice than an Ice Capades-type show, in that there are thrills and unexpected action in every segment of the show.”
The original storyline is about a search for eternal winter and has sets depicting all the seasons.
Smith said that the performers will mix with the audience after the show to answer questions and give autographs.
Tickets are available at (tickets), or by going by Hempstead Hall; seats are available from $15 to $40.
