Emerson's Lady Pirates ran into a buzz saw at Nevada Tuesday night as the Lady Bluejays scuttled the Lady Bucs, 68-32.
The game started out more like a track meet as the Lady Jays raced up and down the court, basically wearing the Lady Bucs down physically. Emerson's senior girls were simply outgunned and outrun by the Nevada five.
Along with the sheer offensive speed of the Lady Jays, Emerson had the problem of a smothering man defense. Period one ended with the Lady Jays in control 20-6.
The situation didn't improve for the visitors until late in the second quarter when Nevada Coach Stacy Cornelius substituted heavily.
Nevada looked to run at every opportunity, with the girls also looking to steal the ball on nearly every pass by the Lady Bucs. However, the Lady Jays weren't perfect on the night. During the first couple of minutes of the second quarter the Nevada crew had turnover problems because of traveling calls. In fact, Nevada's first points of the frame came on a pair of free throws with 5:17 left in the half.
From there, though, the Lady Jays went on a run and ended the half with a 38-17 lead. The bulk of Emerson's points came against the subs.
Period three, though, began with Nevada's starters on the hardwood, with the Lady Jays looking unstoppable. The squad put 26 points on the board in the third by regularly committing theft and flat outrunning the Emerson players.
Members of the Lady Bucs got frustrated and it showed. At one point one of the Emerson players wasn't paying attention, stepped on a ball being passed to her and wound up on her back. At other times, Lady Bucs simply slammed the ball on the court.
The third ended with Nevada leading comfortably 64-29.
The final eight minutes was nothing but subs for Nevada as Cornelius worked to get all of her players game time. It didn't really matter as Emerson's players had quit playing mentally and it showed.
Kenya Frazier led the Lady Jays with 18 points., Macy McRae was next with an even dozen.
In addition, the Lady Jays were 14 of 22 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Jay have been on a roll so far this season. The Nevada senior girls opened with a 62-40 win over Caddo Hills at Caddo; dropped Oden 64-48 in the Acorn Classic, whipped Acorn in its own tourney, 54-45, and clipped Kirby 54-59 at Kirby. This is the first time in three seasons Kirby's girls have lost a game at home.
According to Cornelius, the starters played very little against Caddo Hills.
