  • Historic Washington goes country Thursday night to benefit the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope Kids' College.
The retooled annual fundraiser for the summer enrichment program for grades 1-6 is “Beads, Bags, Blue Jeans, and Boots” this year, and will feature some wild west doin's, according to event organizer Jill Bobo, UACCH Foundation executive director.
Included in the program this year will be celebrity mechanical bull riding; line dancing; benefit auctions; printed commemorative wanted posters; a wild west saloon; barbecue; and, the traditional variety of specialty items for purchase by patrons.
Bobo said the traditionally all-female fundraiser is open to the guys this year, as well.
Dress for the evening will be western or fun casual, and donations or purchases can be made with cash, check, or credit card, according to Bobo.
The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. in the 1940 WPA Gymnasium at Historic Washington, located on Arkansas Highway 4 about nine miles north of Hope.
Beginning in 2006, the Kids' College program has provided a three-week summer enrichment curriculum to the UACCH campus that is designed to give youngsters a first-hand educational experience on the college campus in a fun setting. Bobo said the program has grown from 130 children to more than 400 last year.
The growing popularity of the program has resulted in growing costs, especially in the area of scholarships for children who cannot afford the enrollment fee.
The class line-up for 2014 includes, Mad Science Lab, Brain Games, Wiz Kidz Weather, Magical World of Puppets, Jamaican Me Crazy, Aloha Hawaii, Art World Fantasy, Amazing Science Lab, Construction Junction, I Y My Heart, DigiKidz Technology III, School of Rock, Under the Sea, Rocking with Rocks, and Somewhere in the Ocean.
Limited scholarships will be available, and scholarship forms are in the Kids' College booklet. Scholarship applications or registration fees should be submitted by April 29 at 5 p.m. Contact Nancy Kenworthy at 870-722-8102 for additional information.
