  • The Area Agency on Aging of Southwest Arkansas reminds senior citizens who become 65 years old this year to investigate the Medigap insurance supplement program to Medicare. The secondary health insurance policy, unlike Medicare drug and Medicare Advantage plans, requires no specific enrollment period, according to the AAASA. “The Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a six month period when an insurance company must issue a policy regardless of medical history, health status or prior claims,” the agency announcement said. “Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the first day of Medicare Part B enrollment at age 65 or older. Getting Part B starts the Medigap Open Enrollment Period.” Such supplemental policies require that an enrollee already have qualified for Medicare Parts A and B coverage because the supplemental policy is issued by a private insurer. “It only pays after original or traditional Medicare A and B,” the organization noted. “It's not needed with Medicare Advantage, which is also known as Part C.” A comparison guide of companies approved to sell such insurance in Arkansas is available at www.arkansas.insurance.gov online. Additional information may also be obtained by contacting the AAASA at 870-234-7410, ext. 116, or calling toll free at 1-800-272-2127.
